  3.     The coverage of the crackdown in China (WORLD, June 26) was
  4. of special interest to me. In 1949 I was part of a U.S. unit
  5. working in Shanghai with the Chinese Nationalists. Following the
  6. evacuation of foreigners from the city, I remained behind as
  7. liaison and was sometimes invited to witness public executions
  8. held to intimidate the population of the city. Once a Chinese
  9. aide pointed to one of three victims waiting to be shot and
  10. confided, "That man was arrested last week as a petty thief.
  11. We're using him because we've run out of Communist prisoners."
  12. Forty years later, Nationalist, Communist, nothing much has
  13. changed.
